FRAMINGHAM – For an 11-year-old, Joseph Garcia sure has a lot of tricks up his sleeve.

The sixth-grader can wiggle his way out of a straitjacket, works wonders with a deck of playing cards and can somehow make his pet guinea pig appear inside an empty box.

Performing as JoJo The Magician, Garcia astonished an audience of his peers Friday while putting on his latest show at the Framingham Housing Authority’s activity center.

“I guess I want to be like Penn and Teller,” Garcia said, describing how practice and memory are the keys to making magic.

He started out with cards, watching YouTube to learn tricks like the ones his friends performed.

Now he has “like 100 tricks – at least” and is showing them off in homeroom at Walsh Middle School, for his family and neighbors and at birthday parties and nursing homes. He’s even a member of the Society for Young Magicians in Peabody.

“I think it’s just fun because you get to amaze people and it freaks people out,” he said.

He pulled out a magic wand, playing cards, ropes, balls and cups and other items to entertain during Friday’s show, assisted by his younger sister Jessica.

“I thought he was like magical,” said Maria Rezk, 12, who was especially impressed when Garcia opened a box the crowd swore was empty to reveal the guinea pig.

“It was like, ‘What?!'” Abanoub Karim, 12, said of watching the show. “It was pretty cool.”

Suzanne Garcia, who works as a resident service coordinator for the Housing Authority, proudly watched her son’s acts. She joked she “can’t have a cup of coffee in the morning without him saying, ‘look at this new card trick.’”

Rosemary Garneau, the authority’s resident services manager, said she wasn’t sure what to expect from an 11-year-old aspiring magician.

But she said she was very impressed by JoJo’s tricks and stage presence.

“I was absolutely amazed – he was wonderful,” Garneau said, adding, “I think he definitely has a career.”
